  • Review your policy.  Every insurance policy and claim is different. Reviewing your policy gives you information that specifically applies to you.
  • Document everything. Take lots of pictures immediately after to document any damage. Don’t cleaning up until you’ve documented as much damage as possible.
  • Get quotes from professionals.  If you can, get estimates from a few roofers. You’ll only be responsible to pay your deductible and upgrades.  It is Illegal in Colorado for any contractor to pay, waive, discount, or refund any portion of a homeowner’s insurance deductible. Be wary of any contractor who offers to do so.
  • Be wary of scammers. Unfortunately, big storms brings scammers and unlicensed or out of state roofers to your area with promises of quick and cheap repairs. What kind of warranty or what kind of service do you think you’ll get if they are based in another state? Whether you’re filing an insurance claim or not, research anyone who offers to repair your home. Only hire local roofing companies that are licensed and in good standing with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.
  • Mitigate your damages. You’ll want to take steps to prevent further home or property damage. This is another reason why you should call a roofer right after a storm. Your home may require repairs that could include tarping your roof, cleaning a wet basement, boarding up holes and more.
